IMPROVING URBAN PLACES THROUGH NATURE'S DESIGN
Modular Green Shades for Livable Cities
Cool Urban Microclimates
Our living canopees reduce urban heat by up to 7°C, creating breathable, shaded spaces that make cities more livable — even during extreme heat.
Aesthetic & Iconic Design
Make a statement. Our structures are not only functional but also sculptural, bringing beauty and identity to places, parks, and streetscapes.
Nature Meets Innovation
Urban Canopee blends biomimicry with smart irrigation and plant science — fostering real greenery that adapts and thrives in harsh urban conditions.
Plug and Play Installation
No digging, no disruption. Our freestanding structures are quick to install, easy to move, and designed for flexibility in any environment.
The benefits of bringing more trees in our cities are well documented:
- They bring shade and cooling to assist our warming cities cope with climate change.
- They provide a mood-elevating / stress-releasing environment in the concrete jungle. They create a real oasis of comfort and respite.
- They provide habitat for local biodiversity and help people reconnect with nature.
However, our cities were not designed to accommodate more tree planting. The underground is already crowded with infrastructure - pipework and cables – that don’t go well with living root systems.
At Urban Canopee, we came up with a solution: Combining the amazing properties of climbing plants with an easily deployable composite materials structure mimicking the shape of a tree.

An example of clever design for hard-to-green spaces [with] 'green' lightweight tree canopy-shaped trellises planted with chocolate vine.
This innovative project will provide a sustainable canopy structure above the main outdoor seating area of Mindarie Park, providing shade that combats the effects of global warming and heat island effects while re-establishing urban biodiversity. The ground is rocky in this area which makes it difficult to plant trees so this is a great way to provide alternative shade.
Capable of withstanding some of Australia’s harshest climates, each ‘green funnel’ can support up to three different climbing plant species, is self-sufficient and equipped with a solar panel, battery, water pump and smart irrigation system, and can be easily installed and relocated if required.
